LECTURE
Convergence in the Media is defined as the transition from Old to New; whether it is the internet, text or television; all forms of media go through convergence.
Old Media is known as traditional, legacy and heritage; otherwise known as newspapers, radio and magazines.
New media is current media, although everything that is classified as new media will eventually be classified as old media.
Convergence culture is a form of a paradigm shift for media; a impact that we can never know for certain that way of the future. This is generally because the media industry only see's in the 'short run', something that will generate profits fast.
A convergence from old to new media is the change for online media, from web 1.0 (the basic web, Emails and the internet) to web 2.0 (Social web, Facebook and Twitter) to the 'soon to be' web 3.0 (semantic web).
Web convergence isn't the only form in the media; television has also gone through a form of convergence. News Channels are a great example of convergence, this is shown through topics and tones used. Sunrise is classified as a good form of convergence as it makes the audience fee comfortable without taking away its credibility. On the other hand a bad form of convergence is the 7pm Project who lack creditability due to their tone, although socially, and entertainment wise this does work.
MY OPINION
I find it funny that media ask a industry only thinks in the short run… when it comes to web 3.0 there are major issues, although it will make income in the short term, in the long term it could back fire. i understand the attraction to earning quick money but from a business stand point it seems ridiculous.
