YouTubes 'April Fools'

YouTube.

"Its finally time to pick a Winner" said YouTube representatives in a 3 minute video. YouTube released a video explaining how YouTube will no longer be accepting videos, because YouTube was merely a eight year competition to find the best video.

Furthermore, YouTube said that they were no longer accepting videos after Monday Afternoon and will pick a winner in 2023. The YouTube CEO said "We started YouTube in 2005 as a contest with a simple goal: to find the best video in the world."
At the end of the video April Fools was said and it was revealed it was just a prank for the First of April.

The Impostor

Sunday, 31st March, 60 minutes on WIN! reported on a 'impostor' case.

Nicholas Barclay, a American School boy was missing for 4 years before a impostor walked into barclays family claiming to be Nicholas. The then 23 year old posing as a 16 year old claimed when caught for fraud, that the Barclay family accepted him so willingly because they were covering up the murder of Nicholas Barclay, that his mother apparently committed. The Impostor was caught out by a detective who noticed the difference in ears between a photo of Nicholas and his impostor.

so what lengths will people go to, to cover things up?

let a stranger live amongst you and your family, eat your food, talk to your neighbours and form relationships with those closets to you.

unfortunately for this family there alleged plan to cover up Nicholas' murder backfired when Nicholas' impostor spilled a conversation he had with the Barclay family during a interview with the detective.

Now you know the back story, what do you think? what length would you go to in order to cover something up?

or what lengths would you go to, to ensure you get a new life posing as someone else?

who would you hurt? what would you risk?

I believe what Barclays poser vented, that Barclays family murdered Nicholas. On one hand i understand that families in the situation want their child back so bad that they would believe anything or atone with good news. although to accept a 23 year old posing as a 16 year old… something wasn't right, it just seemed as if they were covering something up, regardless if it was a murder or not.

so what would you do?

If it Bleeds it Leads, If its Local it Leads.

News Values.

Definition: the requirements for good news.

News values are forever changing; values of the media depend on the social stand point at the time and what  interest the audience. Usually bad news is what interest the audience; news of murders, shootings and theft. 'if it bleeds it leads, if its local it leads'

What are news Values?

- Impact
- Audience identification
- Pragmatics
- Source influence

Are news values the same across diff news services? NO
Are news values the same across different countries/ cultures? NO

Common factors of News Values have been analysed by many, Galtung and Ruge values follow;

Values
Negativity
Closeness to home
Recency
Current
Continuity
Uniqueness
simplicity
personality
expectedness (predictability)
elite nations or people
Exclusivity
Size

Also 1979, Golding and Elliot expanded on news values;

Drama
visual attractiveness
Entertainment

2001 O’neil and Harcup – Reviews of galtung and ruge.
Good news
The power elite
Celebrity
Relevance
Follow up
newspaper agenda.
Bad news

These news values do not leave any room for good journalism

Convergence in The Media

LECTURE

Convergence in the Media is defined as the transition from Old to New; whether it is the internet, text or television; all forms of media go through convergence.

Old Media is known as traditional, legacy and heritage; otherwise known as newspapers, radio and magazines.

New media is current media, although everything that is classified as new media will eventually be classified as old media.

Convergence culture is a form of a paradigm shift for media; a impact that we can never know for certain that way of the future. This is generally because the media industry only see's in the 'short run', something that will generate profits fast.

A convergence from old to new media is the change for online media, from web 1.0 (the basic web, Emails and the internet) to web 2.0 (Social web, Facebook and Twitter) to the 'soon to be' web 3.0 (semantic web).

Web convergence isn't the only form in the media; television has also gone through a form of convergence. News Channels are a great example of convergence, this is shown through topics and tones used. Sunrise is classified as a good form of convergence as it makes the audience fee comfortable without taking away its credibility. On the other hand a bad form of convergence is the 7pm Project who lack creditability due to their tone, although socially, and entertainment wise this does work.

MY OPINION

I find it funny that media ask a industry only thinks in the short run… when it comes to web 3.0 there are major issues, although it will make income in the short term, in the long term it could back fire. i understand the attraction to earning quick money but from a business stand point it seems ridiculous.

Clinton backs Gay Marriage.

Hilary Clinton backs gay and lesbian marriage, "To deny the opportunity to any of out daughters and sons solely on the basis of who they are and they love is to deny them the chance to live up to their own God-given potential" (Hilary Clinton). The Former U.S Secretary of State reveals her opinion on Gay and Lesbian rights this past Monday. "LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones. and they are full and equal citizens, and deserve the rights of citizenship. that includes marriage … That's why I support marriage of lesbian and gay couples. I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effect to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and all Americans." Said Clinton.

This interviews occurs days after Hilary's husband Bill Clinton Former U.S president approached the courts to reverse a bill he passed in 1996 that defined marriage between man and woman discriminatory.

She goes on to explain that "like so many others, my personal views have been shaped over time, by the guiding principals of my faith."

Lecture 2 Public and Commercial Media

Commercial and Public Media… Which is Better?

Commercial Media

Commercial Media is:
 - For Profit
 - Non Government Funded
 - Needs Success to produce its product

Due to these characteristics of Commercial Media it is understood why it creates media to entertain. Entertainment = Dollars, Dollars = more commercial media. Productions such as Foxtel, NRL, National Geographic and Fox are considered to be dumbing down their content. In a sense they make their news, and other programs more entertaining in order to attract viewers/ listeners. If you look at Southern Cross Ten's show the 7pm Project: a news program that informs it viewers of the daily news through the use of well known comedians David Hughs, Carrie Bickmore, Kitty Flanagan ect. These hosts of the show report the news with a sense of 'taking the micky' out on the current news. Generally this is done through You Tube videos and interviews that are taken out of context to ensure a entertaining moment, essentially dumbing down the current news or not fully informing the public about all the details of what happened more so just the funny moments that occurred during a sometimes serious Australian happening.

Public Media

Public Media is:
 - Government and tax Payer Funded

"Media whose mission is to serve or engage a Public" (WGBH Educational Foundation Conference)
Many have the perception that due the Public media such as ABC, BBC, CBS ect being government funded causes these channels to be bias towards the current government. Public Media is supports public and the democratic process, so how can they not be bias? It solely comes down to your own perspective. Unfortunately for Public Media many people will never know for sure because the stereotype is to strong so people will not tune in. However Public Media can afford to have less viewers / ratings than public media, not only there funding but organisations like the ABC and SBS have their own form of commercialisation (online shopping and ordinary shopping).

Basically if it came down to which form of media is preferable, they both offers different aspects and both lack different aspects.

This is ME

Hi,
My name is Jess and I'm a keen 3rd year University Student at JCU.

Study
I previously studied Bachelor of Business and after wasting two years of my life studying a course I couldn't stand, I decided to finally do what I wanted to do. Not what my parents or peers thought I should do but what I had a passion for. So now I'm studying a Bachelor of the Arts majoring in Media and Writing, hoping to eventually work in Public Relations for a Mine.
So thats my student background, short and sweet considering its been the past two years of my life.

Music
I am a die hard Music fan, I will listen to just about anything except Pitbull: his inability to make decent lyrics and a word rhyme is just depressing. I listen to the radio constantly, I am a new lover of JJJ well by new I mean the past two years or so. Like a Version, as a singer I had the belief that i would never sing a Whitney Houston song. (there are just some singers that are untouchable in my eyes) JJJ converted my thinking, I love when the new Like A Version comes out. The ability the artist have to take a already deep or relatable song and turn into a song that has a new meaning, a new way of interpreting, and sometimes a slight change of lyrics.

I find it fascinating that a change in tempo, voice and few lyrics can enhance/ change a songs meaning. How one persons truth can be different for another or how one persons truth can be change by a change of tempo.

Movies and Television
I find it quite easy to put myself in someones shoes, I am a empathiser. Unfortunately for me this means I cry in just about everything i watch, have a big grin when something happy happens to the character. its embarrassing when I am with someone and I guess I will find it challenge when needed interview someone (taking the emotion out the job). favourite movie of all time: Moulin Rouge the perfect mixture of timeless songs and my favourite Director Baz Luhrmann, I love his way of making a film. I guess what I mean is when you look at someone like Quentin Tarantino you can recognise his work, alike Tarantino I can easily recognise Luhrmann's work.
Additionally, I am a huge nerd! I love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Star Trek. :)
Just thought I would add that last sentence in so I do not get perceived as something I not.

thats ME

Journalism is...

Journalism is...
"the activity or profession of writing for newspapers or magazines or of broadcasting news on radio or television." (Oxford Dictionary)

Journalism is...

"the Communication of current issues and events to an audience in a structured way, usually in relation to a set of generally agreed social principals such as accuracy" (The News Manual)

I guess Albert Camus sums it up for me, as to why it is so hard to define all journalism.
" Free press can, of course, be good or bad, but, most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anything but bad."
--Albert Camus (1913-1960) French novelist, essayist and dramatist

LETS TALK ABOUT THE STEREOTYPEIn my mind the stereotypical Journo for the 50's to 00's is male, wear a top hat with a cigar behind one ear and notepad and pen in hand. recently my thoughts have changed, I picture someone like Ryan Seacrest... someone who uses all forms of media to get their story across (instgram, twitter, Facebook, blogs, tv and radio.

Titanic 2.0

Clive Palmer is set on building a to scale a remake of this famous ship the Titanic. In the Courier Mail  it is stated that the remake of this legendary ship will set Palmer back a estimated 500 Million Dollars, which seems to be just a small price to pay for the billionaire.

I can understand the fascination with the Titanic and can understand why a Billionaire such as Palmer would want to rebuild the ship, however it also occurs to me  that why should he spend his money on the titanic instead of spending 500 million dollars on  charity or something that will benefit more. With saying that though I do believe that this would be a great boost for the tourism industry and will bring       people from around the world to bask in its glory.

Clive Palmer
I have watched several interviews off Palmer on
this matter of why to build the Titanic. It seems to me that he is just doing this for his own   personal gain, not for tourism or national revenues.
